Edward Ratcliffe Anderson, III, M.D. FACS, FAAOS

Dr. Anderson is a board-certified, triple subspecialty fellowship-trained Orthopedic Spine, Trauma, and Total Joint Reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Anderson has subspecialty training in minimally invasive spine surgery and motion sparing technologies, such as cervical and lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement, Endoscopic Spine Surgery, as well as both non-fusion and fusion-based spinal stabilization.

He has extensive training in complex spine reconstruction, including the non-operative and operative management of adolescent and adult deformity correction, spinal trauma, and spine tumor diagnoses. Additionally, Dr. Anderson is subspecialized in Adult Total Joint Reconstruction, performing minimally invasive Direct Anterior Total Hip Replacement, as well as Total Knee Replacements, and Revision Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasties.

My Story

Triple Fellowship trained in Orthpaedic spine, total joint reconstruction, trauma and complicated fractures. During his Air Force career, Dr. Anderson served as academic faculty for the Orthopaedics Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences as an Assistant Professor of Surgery.

He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented his research both nationally and internationally. Additionally, he has authored several textbook chapters and invited reviews. Dr. Anderson is active as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is an active member in the North American Spine Society, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeons. He serves as an Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and he actively teaches Advanced Trauma Life Support. After 21.5 years of service, Colonel (ret.), Dr. Anderson retired from the US Air Force. He and his family settled back in San Antonio, where he joined the team at Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio. In his free time, Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, snowboarding, skiing, canyoneering, hiking, and flying.

He led the Orthopaedic Service lines at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and served as the Master Clinician at the Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. He deployed twice to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, once to Africa as medical support for President George W. Bush, and once to Croatia as part of a joint multinational medical readiness training mission. Additionally, Dr. Anderson deployed multiple times to provide trauma care support for NASA’s Space Shuttle program as the Space Operations Medical Support. He has cared for combat-injured service members, providing complex reconstructive care.
